ŠKODA’s Rapid Spaceback excels across the board, combining style with practicality to spectacular effect. A sleek, athletic cousin of the ŠKODA Rapid, this compact hatchback boasts dynamic design and a host of convenient features.
Exuding energy and elegance, the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback takes the Rapid as a basis and gives it an eye-catching sporty appearance. Clean lines define the body of the car, creating precise angles to give the exterior an assured feel. These angles travel right along the length of the car to the rounded end of the bonnet and the prominent grill. The long rear window design gives the Rapid Spaceback a stretched look, although the vehicle is in fact 180mm shorter than the Rapid. Available in four trim levels: S, SE Tech, SE Sport and GreenLine, there are a range of exterior options depending on model. For example, front fog lights come as standard on GreenLine and SE Tech trim, and are part of a Style Pack for the SE Sport that also includes a panoramic glass roof.
The practically designed dashboard puts everything within easy reach of the driver, including a clearly positioned instrument panel that displays vital driving information and manual air conditioning or a climate control system, depending on trim level. The interior also boasts fantastic headroom and knee space, as well as a range of 'Simply Clever' design features, from a double-sided boot floor to an ice scraper on the fuel cap. The already significant 384 litres of storage space offered by the boot is made even larger with the rear seats folded down, offering a total of 1,380 litres of room for cargo. Armrests, pockets and storage compartments also offer plenty of storage throughout the rest of the vehicle.
The engine range powering the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback covers three powerful petrol engines and two fuel-saving diesel engines. When it comes to petrol engines, the options range from the 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI, with either 85 or 104bhp variants, or the 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI, which is able to generate 120bhp. Of these the 1.4-litre TSI gives the most athletic performance, with a maximum speed of 126mph and an acceleration of 0-60mph in around 9.4 seconds. That's compared to a maximum speed of 120mph and an acceleration of 0-60mph in around 10.2 seconds with the 1.2-litre TSI.
As for diesel, the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback features the 1.6-litre TDI four-cylinder with either 89 or 104bhp. The 1.6-litre TDI diesel has a combined fuel consumption of 64.2mpg, and the GreenTech variant has super-low CO2 emissions of 106g/km.
An array of technology is in place in the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback to ensure a comfortable and fun driving experience. The Gear Change Recommendations system advises when to change up or down a gear save fuel and reduce noise from the engine, while the start/stop system also saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when the vehicle is stationary. The S model features power steering, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, four loudspeakers, and a CD player with radio. If you buy into the SE Tech level the Rapid Spaceback will also come with cruise control, six loudspeakers, a Bluetooth® phone connection and a MDI (mobile device interface) that lets you connect your MP3 player to the car's infotainment system.
The high structural rigidity around the passenger area in the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback has been designed to provide maximum energy absorption during a collision. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL). To avoid excessive wheelspin when accelerating the Spaceback has an Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR). The vehicle also features a number of passive safety measures including driver and passenger front, side and curtain airbags. Altogether, the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback has an excellent selection of safety features, all aimed to protect you and your family when you’re on the road.
