Toyota hybrids are some of the most affordable cars on the road to own and run, thanks to a combination of impressive fuel economy and lower road tax costs. And they’re among the friendliest to the environment too, with some of the lowest CO₂ emissions figures around.

They use two engines – one petrol, one electric – that work in tandem to produce a relaxed and efficient driving experience. Simply fill up with fuel as normal, and in everyday driving the energy usually lost during coasting and braking is stored in a battery, ready to be recycled by the electric engine.

The only exception to this rule is the ultra-efficient Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which can run on electric-only power to offer silent, zero-emission driving in stop-start urban traffic. When you start to run out of charge, it will revert to petrol-electric hybrid mode. It’s genius.
