Where can I charge my Electric vehicle?

This is one of the most-asked questions by motorists who choose an electrified vehicle.

If you opt for a hybrid car, it’s not something you’ll need to worry about because hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are self-charging. However, plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and 100% electric vehicles (EVs) require manual charging – but don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to do so.

Public charging – charging out and about

By the end of August 2023, there were more than 48,400 EV charging points throughout the UK, across more than 29,000 locations – and this figure is growing on a daily basis.

From home - Home charging

At home, you have two options:

  • Three-pin socket – via an ordinary domestic power supply (rated at 3 kW), you can charge your EV or PHEV overnight
  • Dedicated wall box – a specially installed unit that enables fast-charging (7 kW) capability

From work – Workplace charging

Provided you have the permission of your employer, you’ll have access to your company’s three-pin power source. If your employer has had the foresight to install dedicated fast-charging connectors, all the better.

How to charge?

You can charge an electric vehicle either by plugging it into a socket or by plugging into a charging unit. There are plenty of charging stations around the UK to stay fully charged while you're out and about.

9.3 hours (0% to 100%) – dedicated fast-charging wallbox (rated at 7 kW)

48 minutes (20% to 80%) – fast-charging public connector (rated at 50 kW)
